Te Rūnanga o NgāiTakoto Trust Deed Review Process
Te Rūnanga o NgāiTakoto Trust Deed serves as a key foundation for how we operate, outlining essential governance processes, including the election of Marae Trustees. The review aims to simplify existing procedures, making them more practical while preserving the integrity of our governance structure and to ensure these processes are more efficient and reflective of our collective aspirations as an iwi.

Feedback at a glance
Thank you to all our whanau who participated, shared their whakaaro and gave feedback to the Trust Deed review. We have heard you, collated all the feedback and have sent it to the team at Whāia Legal. Below is a synopsis of your feedback.

Emerging themes:
- Strong support for a hybrid trustee model (marae-based and general seats). There was little support for a general-only model.
- Clear preference for term limits and a rotating trustee system to help with succession planning and continuity.
- Broad agreement that the election process should be simplified, and that marae need more support to participate effectively. There was less agreement on whether marae should each run their own process.
- The Co-Chair role had mixed support – more in favour than against, but feedback highlighted the need for clearer structure or justification.
- Strong backing for shared accountability, with both the Board and marae involved in trustee removal (under a fair and transparent process).
- The corporate trustee model received wide support, with whānau seeing the value in legal protection and operational stability.
